How to Become an Energy Healer in 3 Simple Steps
If you are curious about how to become an energy healer, you’ve come to the right place.

I did not set out to become an energy healer. If you’d asked me twenty years ago, I would have laughed at the idea. But, for me, learning about energy and how the universe works has constantly overlapped with learning about healing modalities.
My reiki teacher told me it’s because I was/am an energy healer in other life times. It comes to me rather naturally.
Of course, there is also the pull of wanting to help my son heal from his allergies. I believe that our children come into this world with a “soul contract” to be our teachers, if we’re paying attention. My son definitely pushes me to learn energy work in ways I would not have, otherwise.
Whatever your own motivations are, learning to become an energy healer is something I’d recommend for everyone.
There are just too many benefits not to, in my opinion. You can use it to self-care and quietly support your loved ones, all for free and on-demand. As an added bonus, you learn crucial concepts on how energy works that help you understand how life works.
Wisdom? Yes, please!
You don’t have to become a healer to make money. You could, but that is not what this post is about.
But what I do know, is that EVERYONE has the ability and potential to become a healer. I wish everyone knew this.
You’re reading this post because you’ve already felt the pull. But maybe you don’t know how, or feel overwhelmed at the idea. All you need is a little bit of curiosity, courage, and action!
This post is all about the three simple steps on how to become an energy healer.
How to Become an Energy Healer
1. Choose the Right Modality
Maybe you just had a great reiki session and became curious if you could do it, too. Maybe you were always told that you give the best massages, and know that your touch seems to make a big difference for others’ pain.
It’s likely that you already have an idea on what kind of healer you want to be. As in, you want to work with your hands, or you want to work with tuning forks. There are so many options out there.
It might be overwhelming to jump in all at once. So, start with research.
When I become interested in a new modality or teaching, this is the first thing I do. I find the best books I can find on the subject and read them. I search through YouTube or podcasts to find everything I can. Often, I simply get bored or distracted away somewhere during this process.
But sometimes, I am hooked! The subject teaches me new, fascinating things and makes connections in my head with things I already knew. It’s like little fireworks that fuel my next action.
[As an aside, this is exactly what’s happening right now with me and Pranic Healing. I’ll be taking its Basic Pranic Healing class over a weekend next month. I’ll write a post to let you know how it goes!]
But how do I know if this is RIGHT FOR ME, you might ask.
Set the intention that you find the right discipline for you, for your highest good, at this time. Whatever you choose, now, it is right for you, now. It doesn’t have to be your end-goal. It may lead you to something else along the way.
All adventures start this way.
When I took my first reiki class, now many years ago, it was mainly because there was a class being offered at a yoga studio within walking distance. I had a toddler and a baby at home and could not spare a big chunk of time to go satisfy a curiosity. It was not the best reiki class, in retrospect. But it gave me enough and raised questions inside to continue learning.
That, my friend, is all you need. It’s okay that you don’t know for sure that THIS is your LIFE PURPOSE. Make it light and enjoy the process. Have faith that it will feed you and guide you to exactly where you need to go.
2. Find the Right Teacher
There are SO many teachers if you’re willing to learn. But finding the right teacher can either super-charge your growth or slow it down.
Like I mentioned, my first reiki teacher introduced me to Usui reiki and gave me my first attunements. Her class was designed to be a few hours on a Saturday afternoon, which is standard for most reiki classes. Compared with what I came to learn at Muktinath Holistic Center, those first classes had just skimmed the surface.
But I know that everything happened exactly the way it was supposed to, for me.
Set the intention of finding the right teacher for you, for now. Then look for the best teacher you can, based on your priorities and constraints.
You may have to consider logistics, just like I did when I first started reiki. Or maybe you are willing to travel for a workshop somewhere for the right fit, which I have done, too.
Spend some time researching and getting a feel for the teacher and their classes before you register. Check out the reviews, if available. Try visiting the center to get a feel for the energy there.
Is it possible that you’re not over the moon with what you find? Sure!
But see if there are any lessons to be learned—is it the right modality for me, for instance—and keep looking.
Most Important Qualities In a Teacher
I have learned this through experience, but you deserve a teacher who is heart-based, rather than ego-based. A teacher who is led by the heart will help you feel empowered and worthy. Loved. That will, in turn, help you soar.
If a teacher’s ego seems to take precedence over empathy and compassion, it’s time to look for another.
What does this mean? If the teacher claims to know everything, or you feel like you’re being ordered around. If a teacher makes inappropriate comments or advances, or if it seems more about profit-making than spirit-growing.
Is the teacher warm and encouraging, or critical and judgmental? Do they acknowledge other traditions/modalities, or do they claim that this is the only way? Do they take at least a little bit of time to listen, and answer your questions?
I have a clear distinction on this now, after having learned with many teachers. The right fit should help you feel empowered and wanting to go back for more. This is especially important as you’re using this learning to step into the role of a healer. You need all the practical and energetic support you can get!
Just beacuse someone learned some techniques and is “licensed” to teach it, it does not mean that person is spiritually advanced.
Spiritual advancement necessitates a back-seat taking of the ego and a front-seat taking of the heart. That’s why my website is named Heart Shaped Sol. Beacuse I want to be led by my heart.
I’ve been incredibly lucky to have found multiple teachers who help me feel worthy and empowered. But I’ve also experienced teachers who are… definitely not this way. Having this distinction helps me save time and energy. It allows me to steer clear of the ones who are not worthy to be my teacher.

Free Training?
A word on whether you have to pay for a class, or if you can manage to learn for free. I have no idea how you’d be able to learn energy healing for free these days.
Reading a book alone, or even taking a recorded online class, is not enough to learn energy healing. You can certainly use those methods to conduct research. But if you really want to learn a skill, it is best to pay a reasonable tuition for a program that will give you certification and, if you’re lucky, a community. It’s about energy exchange. You get more, when you give more.
I usually don’t even mind paying for all the esoteric books, meditations, or online classes that end up not working out. For me, it’s just the cost of learning and opening a lot of doors to see what’s out there. When one works out, all of it is more than worth it because it truly changes my life.
You can’t put a price on transformation, can you?
3. Practice, Practice, Practice
So, you took a class and now know the ins and outs of how to conduct a healing session. Are you a healer? Well, yes and no.
What you need now is experience. You only learn by doing. Get lots of practice. This gives you real embodiment of the techniques and confidence that you can actually do it.
This was also another crucial difference between my first reiki education and what I learned at Muktinath. My reiki mastership program at Muktinath had requirements for clinical studies and volunteer hours. I took on three clients who were not my family and had to provide four sessions each over a period of time. The only thing they had to give was feedback.
I felt lots of internal resistance when I first got the assignments. I’m an introvert. I’d just moved to the town and didn’t know anyone. I felt uncertain about my ability to give a proper reiki session.
It was a huge mental adjustment to consider myself a reiki healer.
I ended up doing more than what was required and learned tremendously during the process. The sessions surprised me. I did not cure any major disease, but certain experiences were really meaningful for both myself and my clients.
After my program, it felt natural to go somewhere and call myself a reiki practitioner. I volunteered at the Muktinath reiki clinic and at the local women’s empowerment center (transition home for domestic abuse victims). I felt confident that I provided value and grateful for the sense of purpose.
You don’t have to volunteer. But be intentional about putting your new skills to practice, whether that’s on yourself, your family or friends. The more you do it, the more it will become a part of you.
“Where your attention goes, your energy goes,” is a phrase I learned from Dr. Joe Dispenza. He teaches about the power of your mind, meditation and healing. Feed your newly acquired skills energy by paying attention to it, through consistent practice.
I hope it surprises you, as it did me.
