How to Become an Energy Healer
My Story
I did not set out to become a reiki master. If you’d asked me twenty years ago, I would have laughed at the idea. But, for me, learning about energy and how the universe works has constantly overlapped with learning about healing modalities.
My reiki teacher told me it’s because I was/am an energy healer in other life times. It comes to me rather naturally.
I Am Healing My Child
Of course, there is also the pull of wanting to help my son heal from his allergies. [See my story here.] I believe that our children come into this world to be our teachers, if we’re paying attention. My son, just by being exactly who he is, definitely pushes me to learn energy work in ways I would not have, otherwise.
Whatever your own motivations are, learning to become an energy healer is something I’d recommend for everyone.
So Many Benefits Not To
There are just too many benefits not to, in my humble opinion. You can use it to self-care and quietly support your loved ones, all for free and on-demand. As an added bonus, you learn crucial concepts on different forms of energy and how they work. This helps you understand how life works.
Wisdom? Yes, please! Magical healing powers? Yes, yes!
You don’t have to become a healer to make money. You could, although that is not what this post is about. The possible business part is a whole other subject I won’t get into.
But what I do know, is that EVERYONE has the ability and potential to become a healer. I wish everyone knew this. I am completely in for a lifetime of learning, as much as I can.
You’re reading this post because you’re already feeling the pull. But maybe you don’t know how, or feel overwhelmed at the idea. All you need is a little bit of curiosity, courage, and action!

3 Steps to Becoming in an Energy Healer
1. Choose the Right Modality
Maybe you just had a great reiki session and became curious if you could do it, too. Maybe you were always told that you give the best massages, and know that your touch seems to make a big difference for others’ pain.
It’s likely that you already have an idea on what kind of healer you want to be. As in, you want to work with your hands, or you want to work with tuning forks. There are so many options out there.
If you don’t already know, it might be overwhelming to jump in all at once. There is a wide range of energy healing modalities you can learn. So, start with research.
Do Your Research
When I become interested in a new modality, this is my first step. I find the best books I can find on the subject and read them, and/or search through YouTube or podcasts to find everything I can. Often, I simply get bored or distracted away somewhere during this process.
But sometimes, I am hooked! The subject teaches me new, fascinating things and makes connections in my head with things I already knew. It’s like little fireworks in my mind that fuel my next action.
[As an aside, this is exactly what’s happening right now with me and Pranic Healing. I took the Basic Pranic Healing course a couple of months ago, and I am so excited to continue learning. Read about that in this post: How to Become a Pranic Healer: Basic Pranic Healing Class Recap.]
Find a Certification Course
I should note that you need to find a modality that will provide a structured training process. You want to be a certified energy healer. This is especially true if you think there might be even the smallest chance of your becoming a professional healer with your own practice. You know, if you want to trade money for your healings some day.
Usually, a training course with a certification process will offer more resources than those that don’t. It is likely to have a community of teachers and other holistic health practitioners from whom you can draw. Community is very important when it comes to becoming an energy healer.
Be Open
But how do I know if this is RIGHT FOR ME, you might ask. Set the intention that you find the right discipline for you, for your highest good, at this time. Whatever you choose, now, it is right for you, now. It doesn’t have to be your end-goal. It may lead you to something else along the way.
All adventures start this way.
When I took my first reiki class, now many years ago, it was mainly because there was a class being offered at a yoga studio within walking distance. I had a toddler and a baby at home and could not spare a big chunk of time to go satisfy a curiosity. It was not the best reiki class, in retrospect, but it gave me enough and raised enough questions inside to continue learning.
That, my friend, is all you need. It’s okay that you don’t know for sure that this is your life’s purpose. Make it light and enjoy the process. It is all enfolding at the right time. Have faith that it will feed you and guide you to exactly where you need to go.

2. Find the Right Teacher
Be Intentional
When choosing an energy healing school, it’s all about the teacher. There are SO many teachers around, if you’re willing to learn.
Like I said, my first reiki teacher introduced me to Usui reiki and gave me my first attunements. She offered a wonderful course that was reviewed well locally. Her reiki level one class, for example, was designed to be a few hours on a Saturday afternoon. This is standard for most reiki classes. But, compared with what I came to learn at Muktinath Holistic Center, my first classes had just skimmed the surface.
But I know that everything happened exactly the way it was supposed to, for me. Because those first classes introduced me to reiki energy, and they gave birth to all the questions that followed.
Set the intention of finding the right teacher for you. Then look for the best teacher you can, based on your priorities and constraints.
You may have to consider logistics, just like I did when I first started reiki. Or maybe you are willing to travel for a workshop somewhere for the right fit, which I have done, too.
If you can, spend some time getting a feel for the teacher and their classes before you register. Check out the reviews, and try visiting the educational institution to get a feel for the energy there.
Is it possible that you’re not over the moon with what you find? Sure!
But see if there are any lessons to be learned—is it the right modality for me, for instance—and keep looking.
Ideal Teacher?
This is a topic that frequently comes up in my posts. But a spiritual teacher, or an energy healing teacher, should make you feel seen and respected. Sadly, this is not always the case. Not only that, different teachers have different personalities. You may work better with one style over another.
Needless to say, the teacher should exhibit in-depth knowledge of the energy healing course she/he is teaching. And be a good manager of his/her own energy. Ideally, you should feel empowered in their presence. So you can stand and learn in your true power as a healer. It helps if the teacher has more of a heart-centered energy than an ego-centered one.
Free?
A word on whether you have to pay for a class, or if you can manage to learn for free. I have no idea how you’d be able to learn energy healing for free these days.
Reading a book alone, or even taking a recorded online class, is just not enough to learn energy healing. You can certainly use those ways to conduct research. But if you really want to learn energy healing, you need experiential learning.
So again, it is best to pay a reasonable tuition for a comprehensive curriculum that will give you certification. It’s about energy exchange. You just get more out of it if you invest more, with money and your time.
I usually don’t even mind paying for all the esoteric books, meditations, or online classes that end up not working out. For me, it’s just the cost of learning and opening a lot of doors to see what’s out there. When one works out, all of it is more than worth it because it can truly change my life.
You can’t put a price on transformation, can you?

3. Practice, Practice, Practice
So, you took a class and is now a certified energy healer. Are you really a healer? Well, yes and no.
You Learn by Doing
What you need now is lots of practice sessions to learn it at a deep level. You only learn by doing, and this is especially true for energy healing. This gives you real embodiment of the techniques, and the confidence that you can actually do it.
This was also another crucial difference between my first reiki education and what I learned at Muktinath. My reiki mastership program at Muktinath had requirements for clinical practice and volunteer hours.
I felt lots of internal resistance when I first got the assignments. Considering that I’m an introvert and had just moved to the town and didn’t know anyone. But most importantly, I felt uncertain about my ability to give a proper reiki session.
It was a huge mental adjustment to consider myself a reiki healer. The course became my own healing journey in many ways.
I ended up doing more than what was required and had an amazing experience. The sessions surprised me. I did not cure any major disease. But certain experiences were really meaningful for both myself and my clients.
Practice Gives You Confidence
After my program, which was a truly transformative experience, I could confidently call myself a reiki practitioner. I volunteered at the Muktinath reiki clinic and at the local women’s empowerment center (transition home for domestic abuse victims). I felt confident that I provided value and grateful for the sense of purpose.
You don’t have to volunteer, although it is great for your karma. But be intentional about putting your new skills to practice, whether that’s on yourself, your family or friends. The more you do it, the more it will become a part of you.
“Where your attention goes, your energy goes,” is a phrase I learned from Dr. Joe Dispenza. He teaches about the power of your mind, meditation and healing. Feed your newly acquired skills energy by paying attention to it, through consistent practice.
I hope it surprises you, as it did me.
